The design of the intervention seeks an urban mapping strategy that studied various aspects of the city’s context. The intervention aims to reinforce the positive aspects of the city. The site, located at the confluence of rails, rivers, streets, and pedestrian paths, serves as conduits of knowledge, information, and material.
A contextual mapping of the surrounding neighborhood sparked by a data analysis theme, aims to form a cataloguing activity that highlighted the absence of various vital functions in the neighborhood. This revealed a significant shortage of affordable housing in the area. With the proximity of new offices, such as Google’s and 1871, there is an increased demand for affordable housing for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.
The intervention aims to increase the density and concentration of different social attractors, calling for new socio-economic and socio-activity arrangements. This mixed-use development converges startups’ demands with research and knowledge creation, fostering knowledge transfer and creating opportunities that enhance the existing Chicago experience.
The intervention creates a matrix of formal and informal work settings, encouraging individual and collective interactions that are essential for knowledge creation. These interactions, occurring in places where people meet and sit casually, are enhanced through various transparencies and programmatic arrangements, allowing users to observe different activities, such as waiting for a train.
Changing the typical office floor plan not only serves functional purposes but also improves environmental performance and overall character. The juxtaposition of housing units and offices enhances the well-being of entrepreneurs, aiming to foster an ever-increasing collaborative environment.
The matrix of spatial relationships aims to reduce the stressful innovative lifestyle, evident in the programmatic layering diagram. These spatial relationships aim to increase engagement with nature, social support, and exercise, promoting overall well-being.
