The newly completed criminal justice center comprises a jail, courthouse, sheriff’s office, and an assessment and intervention center. This facility focuses on diverting people from jail by providing them with mental health services. Constructed on the site of the former Citizens Energy coke plant, the facility was completed in 2021, as reported by the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ) and other media outlets.
Remarkably, this $571 million justice center project garnered widespread approval, uniting both sides of the political aisle during a time of significant partisan gridlock. HOK designed the 11-story building, which was described as “timeless and not trendy” by the firm’s Senior Vice President, Jeff Goodale.
The new facility houses 3,000 beds to meet court needs through 2040 and includes the new sheriff’s headquarters. Additionally, a new Adult Intervention Center (AIC) has been launched nearby to serve as a diversion facility aimed at reducing the number of arrestees entering jail in the first place.
